Student Loans

A higher education is expensive today and many families are experiencing financial problems with the downturn in the economy. This means that more students need to borrow more money than they have had to before.

So what’s out there, when it comes to loans, for a student who is on his or her way to college?

First, there are Federal student loans. To apply for any Federal student loan, and for many private loans from colleges and universities as well, a student, or the student’s parents, will have to fill out a FAFSA or a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is a lengthy process and the student, if he’s independent, or the student’s parents, will have to have up-to-date tax information before filling out the form.

Once the FAFSA is filled out a student will find out if he or she is eligible for Federal Student loans. Federal student loans are the most desirable loans available.

The interest rates on Federal Student loans are usually low and the student has a long period in which to pay back the borrowed money.

The best of Federal loans are subsidized federal loans – Subsidized Stafford Loans and Federal Perkins loans.

Subsidized Stafford Loans:

Are available to students who demonstrate financial need.

Are interest free until ten months after the student graduates, leaves school, or becomes less than a half-time student.

Federal Perkins Loans:

Are even better than Subsidized Stafford Loans and go to students who have the greatest financial need.

Have an interest rate of 5%.

Do not need to be paid back for ten years after graduation.

Can be partially cancelled if the student decides to teach in a low income area or is a teacher of subjects that have a low number of teachers – like math or science.

The Federal government also offers unsubsidized loans – Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and PLUS Loans.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans:

Are not based on financial need.

Are available to any U.S. citizen who is free of drug felony charges.

PLUS Loans:

Are loans for parents of college students.

Parents must have good credit and proof of income.

There are private loans as well. They are available from banks and other lending institutions.

When applying for private student loans , look for low interest rates and low fees or no fees.

When thinking about loans – whether funded by the Federal government or private lending institutions – the place to start is at your college’s financial aid office.

Key Reminders For Students Attending University Career Fairs

First and foremost, the reason why many students fail to utilize a career fair to its fullest extent is that they don’t appreciate the time and effort it took their school and university personnel to organize the event. I deal with human resource individuals all the time and, I can tell you first hand that they firmly know and recognize the fact that they control certain facets of an unemployment rate that, subsequently will be studied in your son or daughter’s economic classes 20 years from now.

Regarding human resource personnel, most don’t appear controlling and they are good people, however they have more influence than they would have say 15 years ago. It would be naïve of them not to recognize this fact. Even on a level playing field, selling HR people is not an easy thing.

Recognize that although this took place on the backend, it still took place and someone who works at the school made the call and, to an extent, vouched for you.

Also, understand that if this event was organized for professionals 50 and over, lines to get in to the conference would consist of hundreds upon hundreds of unemployed, yet talented people. I’m more than happy to be cited as a source of reference as to the aforementioned statement.

Therefore, go into a career fair knowing that if you show up unprepared or with your suit wrinkled, you are making the faculty look bad and making yourself look even worse. If you’re not going to give it your all, it is best to stay home. This is not meant to be harsh, it is just what it is. The last thing you want to do is go to a career fair only to find the company that you want to work for and not be 100% upon an initial introduction.

The world is not going to end if you miss out on a career fair.

Just like actors will turn down an audition if they don’t have a monologue, if you don’t have your corporate pitch, etc. down, don’t audition.

Showing appreciation for being able to attend an event that many don’t have the means to go to, is the first step to success and hard work. You know the saying about not throwing food away? There are parallels. If you appreciate the fact that you are be given the ability to present yourself in front of numerous companies, you will work hard. Let the above factors drive you a little bit. With that information in mind, hopefully you will also heed the following advice.

Pick Your Targets – You Can’t Be Everything to Everyone Let’s say that you are a potential employer (put yourself in their shoes for a moment), would you likely pursue the student that is only seeking select employers in a matching industry or for a matching job or would you like the student who is wondering around to every employer, having a two minute chat, then moving on?

There is absolutely no reason to speak to every potential employer there; there is absolutely every reason to do research on every employer that is going to attend. If you have all of your research done, then you can pick the companies that you want to approach based on things like your perception of their corporate culture, how friendly they appear and whether or not the employee of the firm wants to be at the event.

Most will, but you never know. Therefore, if on target does not seem as appealing as they did on paper, you can go to your next target instead of just hovering around. Simply “being present” at one of these fairs is the equivalent of being at the 7th grade dance and sitting on the bleachers.

Online University Courses or Distance Learning Courses for Aspiring Students

Today, every student wants to study and have a good career in life so as to enjoy a good lifestyle. However, it is not possible to start colleges or university in every city or village and the students have to travel long distance to pursue their courses or have to stay in hostel. Thus, rising cost of education, commuting expenses, hostel expenses, distance and time required to complete a course hinders many students from continuing education. But today with the use of information technology many universities and institutions are providing Online University Courses or Distance Learning Courses so that all the aspiring students get benefited.

Online University Courses provides degrees in almost every field like medical, account, law, engineering, web designing, etc. The students can earn a degree in each and every course that can be earned through traditional universities.

The students can study according to their own pace while pursuing Distance Learning Courses. No time period is specified for completing a course. It is not mandatory for the students to attend classes organized on internet because every thing is online and even if you miss something you will be able to get it in Online University Courses. These courses are cost effective and even financially weak students can also afford it. Distance Learning Courses have reduced the distance and has saved a lot of time of the students by providing education through internet.

The students are really benefited by the Online University Courses but following are the main beneficiaries of these courses:

Working People- Working people can enroll for Distance Learning Courses and study while continuing their job. This helps to grow in their career and achieve a respectable position at work place.

Poor Students- The students who are financially weak can easily study through Online University Courses as these courses are affordable because they do not have to pay high college fees or hostel rent.

Physically Disabled Students- Distance Learning Courses are for the students who are physically disabled and cannot commute long distances to attend college. They can sit at home and study to get a degree. All that is needed is a computer with internet connection.

Hence, if you want to become big in life and attain a bright career in future you can enrol for Online University Courses or Distance Learning Courses but remember to enrol only in accredited schools because only an accredited university degree can help you get what you want.

Jems Morgan here focuses on the importance and advantages of Distance Learning Courses that are much more easier and convenient to pursue. For information on Online University Courses please visit http://www.rdi.co.uk/.

It is not easy for all people to pass the college education. This is due to the money spent on fee, educational equipments food and other bills. But it can be solved now by the grants from educational instutions or government. They are totally free and you can get them just by applying, except for paying back or doing special work. All you need is a reason.

Who can apply for a grant for students (this is by no means exhaustive):

People who come from poor families
Students who live in unconditional circumstances
Minorities
People who are older than traditional students
Members of the armed forces and their families
Students who aspire to be teachers themselves

There are different kinds of grants, depending on who is giving you money.

The biggest sum probably comes from the Pell grant for low-income students. Their largest grant for one student is ,350 at the moment. Another student grant is the Academic Competitiveness Grant. This one is especially for first and second year students who have a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA). In this case the grants are 0 for first year students and ,300 for second year students. Also many states offer their own grant programs. California for example has its Cal Grant which determines eligibility by your needs and your grades.

As I stated above many large corporations also offer grants. For them it’s a kind of investment. The more college graduates there are in a certain field, the bigger the possibility to win some of them over as highly qualified employees.

There are also many grants for ethnic minorities like African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Native Americans. Women are also targeted by specific grants, especially when they have children and want to continue their education at a later point in life.

When applying for a grant for university students make sure to stick to these basic rules:

Make sure your school is accredited by an accrediting agency.
Get your own and your family’s financial documents ready. You have to prove that you’re in a tough financial situation.
If there are other requirements, make sure they apply to you.
Pay close attention to application deadlines and never lie. Intentionally wrong statements can get you into a lot of legal trouble.

That is just the tip of the iceberg though. If you want to get more tips on how to get a grant for students, then I would take a look at the student grant website to get more information about this issue.

Job Hunting Tips For University Students – Part III

Finding that perfect job after your university days starts much earlier by looking for jobs and building relationships from your early years as a student.

We didn’t say job hunting after university was going to be easy. But it doesn’t have to be that complicated either.

Here are some tips on where to find those hidden jobs and how to build those career relationships.

Mentors
Find mentors now. Many successful professionals love to give back by being a mentor. You maybe surprised at how receptive many are. They are a great network to show you the ropes, and maybe make connections and recommendations when you need a job. If you don’t know where to start to look for a mentor, try your school’s alumni services (they may share some of their contacts or to give your coordinates to some of the people on their list), people from professional associations, profs and their contacts, speakers or guests at events, people in the news.

Some of these mentors become your life-long friends and future clients or suppliers when you make inroads to that coveted job. It’s a win-win situation and a lot of the mentors are well aware of this.

Careers Center
If your school has a career center, not only check the listings, make a point of getting to know the staff and career consultants. Let them know what you’re looking for and ask for tips and advice, contacts, or mentors. Make a statement and build your credibility so that you are at the top of their minds for opportunities that come up and that they are able to refer. Do the same with head hunting companies.

I was getting exceptional service from our career center. I mentioned it to the staff and one day I wrote them a card and took them some organic plums.

So maybe the fruits were not such a smart idea, but they recognized the gesture and the fact that I appreciated their efforts. They have been my best friends (and some of the most resourceful) in job hunting since.

Volunteer
Network, add to your skills set, and get some experience in your field of interest. You will be amazed at how effective volunteering is. Some of the best job related word of mouth, referrals and karma comes from volunteering.

Social networking sites
Linked in is a good professional network. Build your online profile and don’t be afraid to ask for referrals or career opportunities from your network.

Adelphi University Journalism Students Participate in PatchU

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that Assistant Professor of Communications Mark Grabowski’s Web Journalism 2 class has joined 13 other colleges and universities nationwide in partnering with Patch, an online community news resource, in the PatchU program. PatchU provides communications students with the opportunity to gain multimedia journalism skills though hands-on reporting projects centered on producing news videos, blog posts, and digital photos under deadline conditions for Patch.com’s seasoned editors. This comprehensive journalism experience also includes working with social media outlets and covering local events such as town and school board meetings and court hearings and has the potential to lead to job opportunities for students.

Through the program, students in Professor Grabowski’s class have been enlisted by local Patch websites to write articles.

“Each week we are given a list of assignments that need to be covered and we can pick which one we would like. We then attend the event, conduct interviews, and bring the information back and write an article. We also take photos and sometimes provide video. We then submit the article written to the editor, it is posted and she then provides feedback and how we can improve on the next one,” says Erika Loomer ’12.

By composing articles on a regular basis as well as attending professional development seminars centered on topics such as the hiring process and photography training, “The partnership allows us to utilize the skills learned inside the halls of Blodgett and apply them to a working environment,” says John Otano ’11.

Not only does the process give students an invaluable learning experience, but it also provides a financial incentive.

“We are also getting paid a story, which really makes it feel like we’re freelance writers; like it is not just for school and is the real deal,” says Vanessa Canner ’11.

The benefits of Adelphi’s partnership with PatchU reach far beyond the current semester; the opportunity allows participating students to gain an advantage in today’s competitive job market. “Adelphi’s partnership with Patch.com is going to make our students competitive for good journalism jobs with graduates from the top journalism schools in the country. When you apply for a job, recruiters often don’t even ask for your GPA. They care mostly about your work samples, your experience and your multimedia skills. Our students are going to be getting lots of hands-on experience, developing their multimedia skills and building up impressive portfolios,” says Professor Grabowski.

PatchU is a Patch Media initiative to build strong relationships with journalism schools as well as colleges and universities across the country. Patch is a community-specific news and information platform dedicated to providing comprehensive, hyper-localized coverage for individual towns and communities.
